Can I make a morning ferry after a night landing?
Almost always, yes. The first Rafina ferries to the Cyclades generally leave between about 07:00 and 07:45 in summer, and the airport-to-port run takes only 20–30 minutes — so even a 4–5 AM arrival leaves a comfortable buffer.
A typical timeline for a 04:15 landing:
- ~04:15–05:00 — land, clear passport control and grab bags.
- ~05:00 — meet your driver (or grab a taxi) and head out.
- ~05:30 — arrive at Rafina port (roads are empty at dawn).
- ~05:30–07:00 — coffee & breakfast by the quay, then board.
Book the ferry first. Lock in your specific morning sailing before you fly, then plan the transfer around it. Search live times & prices → and check the Rafina ferry schedule.

Getting from Athens Airport to Rafina at 4–5 AM
Three realistic options at that hour — the KTEL airport bus doesn't run yet, so it's not one of them.
- Fixed price from €45 (more for a van/family).
- Driver tracks your flight and waits with a name sign.
- Child seats on request — the big win with young kids.
- Zero stress at 5 AM — no queue, no haggling.
- 24/7 rank at Arrivals — no need to pre-book.
- Metered; the midnight–05:00 night tariff is higher.
- Usually no child seats; agree the fare to Rafina first.
- In Greece both mainly dispatch licensed taxis.
- Work at the airport, but supply to Rafina at dawn can be thin.
- Fine as a backup; don't bank on one for a tight ferry.
Our honest take for a family: with two tired kids and a ferry to catch, a pre-booked transfer is worth it — a known driver is waiting the moment you land, the price is fixed, and you can ask for child seats. Keep Uber/Bolt as plan B. See the full airport-transfer guide.
Where to wait & get breakfast at Rafina port
You'll likely have an hour or so before boarding — and Rafina is made for exactly this.
- Several cafés around the harbour open early for the first ferries.
- A bakery (fournos) for fresh bread, spanakopita and pastries kids love.
- Grab takeaway coffee and snacks for the crossing too.
- The port sits right by the town square — a short, flat walk to the boats.
- Benches and a covered waiting area by the quay if it's early.
- Restrooms at the port; aim to be at the gate ~30 min before sailing.
Heading to Naxos (or the southern Cyclades)?
A quick reality check on the route, because it's not the same as Mykonos or Andros.
Rafina runs a seasonal high-speed service to Naxos in summer (roughly April–October, about 3½–4 hours) — so a same-morning connection is often possible, but you must confirm a morning sailing exists on your date before relying on it. If the timing doesn't line up, two good alternatives: take an earlier Cyclades boat and connect, or simply fly Athens → Naxos (short domestic hops run in season). For Santorini and Ios, direct Rafina sailings are limited and seasonal, so Piraeus may suit better. See the Rafina → Naxos page or compare on Rafina vs Piraeus.
Coming home — stay in Athens or Rafina before your flight?
For the night before you fly out of ATH, it depends on which port your return ferry uses.
Check where your boat lands: many Cyclades ferries arrive into Rafina, but some go to Piraeus. If yours arrives at Rafina, stay the night in Rafina — you're only 20–30 minutes from the airport and skip the trek into Athens and back. If it arrives at Piraeus, a night in central Athens makes more sense. Either way, book a room close to your morning departure. Where to stay near Rafina & the airport →
