Rafina FAQ

Quick, honest answers to the questions we hear most — getting here, ferries, transfers and the port.

Getting to Rafina

How do I get from Athens Airport to Rafina?
The quickest, easiest option is a taxi or a private transfer — about 20–30 minutes door-to-door. There's also a direct KTEL airport bus, or you can drive (~25 km). There is no direct train.
Is there a bus from Athens to Rafina?
Yes. KTEL Attikis buses run to Rafina from Nomismatokopio (Metro Line 3). The full fare is €2.40, paid on board in cash, with the first bus around 05:55 and the last around 22:40, roughly every 20 minutes to 2 hours. The stop is right at the port.
Is there a train to Rafina?
No — there's no direct train. From the airport, take the suburban train to the city centre, then continue by KTEL bus or taxi.
How far is Rafina from the airport?
About 25 km, or 20–30 minutes by road — noticeably closer than Piraeus, and without the cross-Athens traffic.
Is there parking at Rafina port?
There's no free parking on the quay, but there's paid municipal parking within walking distance plus street parking in town. Arrive early in July and August, and use a paid or guarded lot for multi-day trips. See the port guide.
How early should I arrive before my ferry?
Aim for 30–45 minutes before departure, and a little more in peak summer. Boarding usually opens 20–30 minutes before sailing.

Ferries from Rafina

Which islands can I reach from Rafina?
Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini and Marmari (on Evia), plus onward Cyclades. Rafina is the main gateway to the northern Cyclades — and Andros is reached from Rafina rather than Piraeus. Search all ferries.
How long are the ferries to the islands?
Roughly: Andros 1–1½ h, Tinos 1½–2 h, Mykonos 2–2½ h, Paros 2½–3 h, Naxos 3½–4 h, Santorini 5–6½ h. High-speed services are fastest.
Which ferry companies sail from Rafina?
Fast Ferries, Golden Star Ferries and SeaJets, using a mix of high-speed and conventional vessels depending on the route and season.
How much are ferry tickets?
Fares vary by operator, vessel (high-speed vs conventional) and season. Compare live prices in our ferry search and book early in summer for the best rates.
Can I take a car on the ferry?
Yes — the ferries on the main Rafina routes carry cars and motorbikes. Reserve vehicle space in advance during the summer peak.
Do I need to book ahead?
In July, August and on weekends, yes — the fastest boats and best fares sell out first. Off-season you can usually book closer to the date.

How do I find my driver?
Your driver meets you at arrivals holding a sign with your name, and helps with your luggage to the car.
What if my flight is delayed?
Drivers track your flight and adjust the pickup, so they'll be waiting even if you land late — at no extra charge.
Can a transfer take me to central Athens or elsewhere?

The port & town

Where is Rafina?
Rafina is a port town on the east coast of Attica, about 25 km east of Athens and roughly 20–40 minutes from Athens International Airport.
Why use Rafina instead of Piraeus?
It's much closer to the airport, avoids the Athens traffic and saves about an hour, and it's a compact, walkable port — so you can fit in a swim or a meal by the water before you sail. It's also the gateway to the northern Cyclades.
Can I swim or eat near the port?
Yes — there are beaches a short hop away and plenty of tavernas right by the water, which is part of what makes sailing from Rafina so easy.
